Main conclusions

  • Spain is ranked 17th out of the 28 EU countries in the Sustainable Innovation Index (60th percentile).
  • The situation in Spain is rather unfavourable and the nation is penalised for environmental aspects such as low investments in environmental protection (no. 26) and loose environmental regulations (no. 22), in addition to social aspects such as youth unemployment (no. 26).
  • Spain has moderate levels of sustainable innovation. On the one hand, the high level of employment in eco-industries (no.1) stands out as proof of the leadership and employment capacity of the eco-industrial sector. On the other hand, innovative activity is penalised by the low protection of intellectual property (no. 26).
  • The level of results attained is also moderate. The combined results obtained in environmental aspects (no. 1) stand out thanks to strong sales in eco-industries and to the productivity of energy and natural resources. Spain also does well in social matters (no. 7) because it has the longest life expectancy in the EU, appropriate social accessibility to the healthcare system and an average ratio of men and women in the workplace (85%). However, in terms of good governance, the levels for corruption perception (no. 18) and the ethical behaviour of companies (no. 21) penalise the total.
  • For every area, good governance aspects are without a doubt Spain’s biggest opportunity for improvement in terms of its performance as well as the generated perception. Spain is ranked 13th for environmental aspects and 14th for social matters. In turn, it holds the 24th position for good governance aspects as a whole.
  • Spain faces the challenge of feeding its sustainable innovation system with the results obtained.
